For emerging designer brands and boutique curators, Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs) are frequently viewed as arbitrary commercial hurdles. In reality, in authentic handwoven basketry, the 100-piece threshold is governed by strict physical and operational equations.

1. Dye Lot Calibration & Lot Uniformity

Natural fibres—such as raw unbleached raffia and cotton cord—do not accept synthetic dyes identically to processed polyester or nylon. To match your brand colour card, our dye team prepare specialized warm-water dye baths.

The minimum practical dye lot volume accommodates approximately 25 to 30 kg of raw fibre—which precisely translates into roughly 80 to 100 medium-sized totes. Running smaller batches results in severe pigment variance and streakiness between individual bags.

Key Procurement Fact: Splitting an order across 2 complementary colourways (e.g., 50 Natural / 50 Terracotta) is viable because both dye lots can be scheduled in the same weekly production shift.

2. Pattern Toolings & Dimensional Rhythm

While machine-stamped canvas totes can be cut with laser beds in seconds, every handwoven bag relies on an artisan establishing a physical "rhythm" with their crochet hook or plaiting guide.

The first 5 to 10 bags of any new style require calibrating stitch tightness and seam allowances against the master tech pack. Once the artisan locks in the tension, pieces 11 through 100 flow with remarkable dimensional repeatability. Stopping at 20 pieces means terminating production precisely when weaving precision reaches its peak efficiency.

3. Sample Fee Crediting Economics

Developing a bespoke bag requires drafting a paper pattern, cutting master lining dies, and creating physical prototypes. To protect workshop engineering time, sampling is quoted per project once we have seen the brief.

When a brand proceeds to a 100-piece bulk order, this prototype fee is credited back onto the final production invoice, so the development step is not an extra cost.
